Many beaches in Florida had already existed years before they were recognized as an official state. One of them is Bradenton. What created this riveting whirlwind of history are the pirate stories, Spanish conquerings, as well as the native American exploration. 

Here are some of the things that you need to know about the history of Bradenton.

It Has Already Existed Dating Back 2000 Years Ago

There were some artifacts that were found that indicated that people already settle into this beach 2000 years ago. 

There were also speculations that the Native Americans found Bradenton to be hospital land for long-term settlements. However, it was believed that for the longest time, Bradenton was actually used for hunting and fishing. 

The place is in close proximity to the water. Apart from that, it is also isolated. This makes it a perfect spot for those kinds of activities. 

Hernando de Soto led a Spanish expedition back in 1539 where the Spaniards briefly stayed at Bradenton and laid claim to the beaches there. 

The Establishment Of Bean Point

It was in the 20th century that someone actually lived in Bradenton for the long term. The name of the settler was George Emerson Bean. 

In the 1890s, he developed an approved homestead which later came to be known as the Bean Point. 

It is located at the Northern part of the island and is considered to be a scenic and isolated view. Up until this day, it still remains to be one of the most popular attractions in Florida. 

There were already a number of people who considers Bradenton to be their permanent residence. However, getting to this island is still pretty tricky. The only way to travel there is through watercraft. 

It was only in 1922 that a bridge was constructed meant to connect Bradenton from the mainland. Today, the connection between the Cortez village and Bradenton beach became a centerpiece for tourists. 

Where Bradenton Got Its Name

Bradenton is located inside Anna Maria and on the Southern portion was called the Cortez beach. 

However, in the 1920s there was a local newspaper called the Bradenton Herald and started calling Cortez beach Bradenton instead. The purpose was to distinguish the beach from the mainland which is Cortez village. Eventually, the name just stuck. 

It was in the 1950s that Bradenton was officially named as a city. The population was also booming. With that, there needed to be a more superior bridge connection. The new bridge was established in 1967. 

Historic Sites In Bradenton

Visiting historic sites is sort of like going back in time to see what a place looked like in the past. 

One of the most well-known historic sites in Bradenton is The Manatee Village, Historical Park. 

It’s a series of restored houses that were built in Bradenton back in the times. Some of the houses were also partly recreated for the purpose of aesthetics. 

At 402 Pine Avenue, you’ll find the Anna Maria Historical Society which gives people an idea on how the Bradenton Beach was developed. 

There is also the Historic Bridge Street which houses restaurants and shops inside restored buildings in Bradenton.
