History Of Tampa Florida

The first time you set foot into a new country or city, you might find yourself a bit mesmerized, not just by the beautiful surroundings and architecture but also by the intrinsic and unique culture the place has.

The truth is that traveling to a new place is more than just about getting new photos for your Instagram page. Beyond that, it is also about immersing into a new culture.

With that, before visiting a new country or city, it might be a good idea to learn a thing or two about the history of the place you are planning to go to.

So here are some of the things you need to know about the history of Tampa in case you ever plan to set foot into its wonderful land.

It Was First Called Tanpa

Spanish explorers came to the Tampa Bay in 1528. By the time they arrived, they noticed that there was already a civilization that was hanging around for at least 3,500 years.

There were several tribes that dominated the Gulf Coast. There was also a Calusa village that was called Tanpa which was a term that meant a stick of fire. Eventually, this little village came to be known as Tampa.

By 1700, the tribes of Tampa Bay had vanished because an illness for which no one had immunity had struck the land.

Tampa Bay was then raided by English and Indian colonists. They took whatever it is they could take and destroyed what remains of the settlements.

Tampa Bay became a desolate and inhabited place and fell into the possession of British conquerors. After the American Revolution, the land once again became the possession of the Spaniards.

The First Modern Settlement Of Tampa Bay

In 1821, the US decided to pay the Spaniards $5 million in exchange for the ownership of Tampa Bay.

When that happened, the northern part of Florida became a haven for runaway black slaves as well as displaced Simonile Indians.

But it wasn’t long before White Americans wanted to settle there to grow cotton. With that, the black Americans had to go further South, around the Tampa Bay.

It wasn’t long before a fort was built there to house the soldiers that were sent there to keep guard on the angry Seminoles. It was named Fort Brooke and became known as the first modern settlement ever built in Tampa.

Tampa’s Economy Roller Coasters

Between the 1840’s and 1850’s there had been lots of violent conflict between the white Americans and the Seminoles

Of course, at the end of the war, Tampa still stood tall but before that victory, there were lots of enormous setbacks.

There was once a lucrative beef trade but it wasn’t long before epidemics struck the area. There was also a civil war which left Tampa in economic ruins for years even after the war. These setbacks continued until the end of The Great Depression. It was only during the emergence of the cigar industry that Tampa was able to get back on its heels.
